Carson Wentz Reveals Former Teammate That Influenced Him to Sign With Chiefs

Quarterback Carson Wentz signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday to suit up as Patrick Mahomes's backup in the 2024 NFL season.

Wentz told reporters Thursday that he has one former teammate to thank for inspiring him to join the team—quarterback Nick Foles.

Foles, who was Wentz's teammate on the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017 and '18, played on the Chiefs during the 2016 season as a backup to quarterback Alex Smith. Foles spoke very highly of his time under coach Andy Reid's leadership in both Philadelphia (from 2012-13) and Kansas City. Foles also played under current Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy on both teams.

"I remember all the good things he had to say about his time here," Wentz said, via ESPN. "He absolutely loved it. He loved working with those guys, and those things he said to me back then definitely still rang true in my head as I was making this decision. I just remember all the positive things he said about the organization, coaches. ... Those things were definitely a factor and gave me a little more peace and comfort in knowing what I was getting into."

The Chiefs mark the fifth team in as many years that Wentz has joined after he began his career on the Eagles in 2016. He's since had one-year stints with the Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders and the Los Angeles Rams. Now he's joining the Super Bowl LVIII champions.
