Deivon Smith's healthy return sparking St. John's jump that raises its ceiling Look no further than Smith’s return to health for this recent jump. The jet-quick lead guard is almost impossible to stay in front of.
FEBRUARY 24 • NYPOST.COM
Getting back in form Smith accumulated 18 points (7-17 FG, 3-5 3Pt, 1-1 FT), four rebounds, five assists, one block and two steals in 32 minutes during Wednesday's 82-58 victory over DePaul.
Impact Smith made his first start for St. John's since Jan. 11 and scored his most points since Dec. 28, as the Red Storm faced a soft matchup and were without leading scorer RJ Luis. It remains to be seen if Smith holds on to this role after Luis returns, but the good news is that one of the team's top transfers is available and producing after battling a neck injury for much of the calendar year.
FEBRUARY 20 • ROTOWIRE
Kadary Richmond, Deivon Smith more than make up for star's absence as St. John's crushes DePaul The two dynamic lead guards seem to be hitting their stride together.
FEBRUARY 20 • NYPOST.COM
Starting vs. DePaul Smith is included in the starting rotation for Wednesday's game against DePaul, Zach Braziller of the New York Post reports.
Impact Smith will be making his first start since Jan. 11 and his eleventh of the season. The senior guard has totaled 20.0 points and 9.0 rebounds across his last three outings, logging at least 25 minutes in each.
FEBRUARY 19 • ROTOWIRE
Back against Creighton Smith accumulated eight points (4-9 FG, 0-2 FT), two rebounds, three assists and one steal over 26 minutes during Sunday's 79-73 victory over Creighton.
Impact Smith has been in and out of the lineup with a nagging neck injury ever since the calendar turned to 2025. While his return is encouraging, it seems he may continue to see slightly limited run off the bench while he gets back into a groove. It's been tough to rely on him from a fantasy standpoint during the recent run, as Smith hasn't recorded double-digit scoring in over a month.
FEBRUARY 18 • ROTOWIRE
Available against Creighton Smith (neck) will be available for Sunday's matchup against Creighton, per Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Impact Smith will make his return to the lineup following a single-game absence with a neck injury. The 6-foot senior has been an impact player for St. John's this season, averaging 9.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game since transferring in from Utah in the off-season.
FEBRUARY 16 • ROTOWIRE
Warming up Sunday Smith (neck) is in uniform and warming up ahead of Sunday's matchup with Creighton, Roger Rubin of Newsday reports.
Impact It was reported earlier in the week that Smith could potentially miss the remainder of the season, but it now appears that the senior guard could be back in action Sunday. Smith's return would certainly give St. John's a boost down the stretch -- he averaged 9.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 20 games this year.
FEBRUARY 16 • ROTOWIRE
Could miss the remainder of season Smith (neck) is in danger of missing the rest of the season, Zach Braziller of the New York Post reports.
Impact "We have to get him healthy," head coach Rick Pitino said of his senior guard, who's missed four of the Johnnies' last eight games. Smith is now in danger of missing the remainder of the 2024-2025 campaign, which would be a big blow to St. John's back court depth.
FEBRUARY 12 • ROTOWIRE
Out for Johnnies Smith (neck) was spotted in street clothes and won't play against Villanova on Wednesday night, Roger Rubin of Newsday reports.
Impact Smith will be sidelined against the Wildcats after he returned from injury and played three straight games for St. John's. The do-it-all guard, who averages 9.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.8 steals, will get his next chance to play on Feb. 16 against Creighton.
FEBRUARY 12 • ROTOWIRE
Doubtful at Villanova Smith (neck) is doubtful for the Red Storm's game Wednesday at Villanova, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Impact Smith doubtful for the Red Storm's upcoming game likely indicates their injured guard will be unavailable then. Yet, he is not out. Smith was doubtful for the Red Storm's mid-January game against Seton Hall at Newark but logged 17 minutes there.
FEBRUARY 12 • ROTOWIRE
Misses practice Monday Smith (neck) didn't practice on Monday, Zach Braziller of the New York Post reports.
Impact Smith reportedly "tweaked" his neck, and while that doesn't sound all that severe, it's still causing the guard to miss practice two days before St. John's clash with Villanova. That certainly throws his status into question, but Smith still has time to get himself ready to go Wednesday night. The guard recently missed time with a shoulder injury, but has played in the last three games for the Johnnies.
FEBRUARY 10 • ROTOWIRE
Tough shooting in return Smith notched three points (1-10 FG, 1-3 3Pt), three rebounds, six assists and three steals across 28 minutes during Saturday's 68-66 win over Providence.
Impact While Smith has seen far better scoring days, he still provided solid ancillary production in his return from a two-game absence due to a shoulder injury. The fifth-year senior hasn't started since Jan. 11, but his outlook remains positive even if a sixth-man role continues, as no other St. John's reserve logged more than five minutes in the contest.
FEBRUARY 2 • ROTOWIRE
Back in action Saturday Smith (shoulder) will be available for Saturday's game against Providence, Zach Braziller of the New York Post reports.
Impact Smith will make his return against the Friars after missing three of St. John's last four games with a shoulder injury. The 6-foot senior is averaging 10.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.8 steals on 27.2 minutes per game this season.
JANUARY 31 • ROTOWIRE
Won't play vs. Hoyas Smith (shoulder) won't play for St. John's against Georgetown on Tuesday, Zach Braziller of the New York Post reports.
Impact Smith will now miss his second straight game and his third in four outings. The guard reportedly hasn't been practicing, so there's currently no timetable for a return. His next chance to play will come on Feb. 1 against Providence.
JANUARY 27 • ROTOWIRE
Requires "practice time" Smith (shoulder) requires "practice time" before being available again, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Impact During early-January, Smith suffered a shoulder dislocation that worsened on Jan. 18 at Seton Hall. Rothstein's update indicates the problem remains. Smith requiring "practice time" indicates he may be out Tuesday at Georgetown.
JANUARY 26 • ROTOWIRE
Out for game Smith (shoulder) is out for the Red Storm's game Wednesday against Xavier at New York City, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Impact According to Kevin Connelly of FanSided.com, the Red Storm using Smith for their Saturday game at Seton Hall was a surprise. Unsurprisingly, he did not play well, having made none of his six field-goal attempts then. Smith wanted to play then and got to, but he will not be so lucky this time.

Comes off bench Saturday Smith (shoulder) produced two points (0-6 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 2-4 FT), three rebounds and two assists over 17 minutes during Saturday's 79-51 win over Seton Hall.
Impact Smith was questionable leading up to the matchup but was able to give it a go. The senior guard will hope to earn more minutes for Wednesday's matchup against Xavier.
JANUARY 18 • ROTOWIRE
Uncertain on availability Smith (shoulder) will dress Saturday to face Seton Hall but it's uncertain if he'll play, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.
Impact Smith didn't play in St. John's 63-58 win over Georgetown, and while seeing him suiting up is a step in the right direction, his availability remains uncertain. The senior guard has started in all but three of his 16 outings this season, and if he's out, then Kadary Richmond, Simeon Wilcher and Jaiden Glover would be in line to receive extended minutes.
JANUARY 18 • ROTOWIRE
Doubtul again Smith (shoulder) is doubtful for the Red Storm's game Saturday at Seton Hall, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Impact Smith was doubtful before the Red Storm hosted Georgetown on Tuesday. The redshirt senior did not play then, so a weekend DNP would not be surprising. Without him part of the Red Storm's starting lineup, Simeon Wilcher logged five points (2-8 FG, 1-4 3Pt) and two steals.
JANUARY 18 • ROTOWIRE
Out Tuesday night Smith (shoulder) won't play against Georgetown, Zach Braziller of the New York Post reports.
Impact The Johnnies' starting point guard was considered doubtful, so this comes as little surprise. Smith, who's nursing a sprained shoulder, will miss his second game of the season and his first since Nov. 30. His next chance to play will come on Jan. 18 against Seton Hall.
JANUARY 14 • ROTOWIRE
Doubtful for Tuesday Smith (shoulder) is not expected to appear in Tuesday's game against Georgetown, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.
Impact Head coach Rick Pitino has stated that "as of now" Deivon Smith will be inactive for Tuesday's game against the Hoyas. The 6-foot senior has seen action in 16 games this season (13 starts), averaging 10.8 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.9 steals on 27.8 minutes per game. If Smith is sidelined as expected, Simeon Wilcher would likely move into St. John's starting lineup.
JANUARY 14 • ROTOWIRE
Toss-up for Tuesday Smith told reporters that he's day-to-day and 50/50 to play Tuesday against Georgetown, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.
Impact Smith's shoulder sprain isn't expected to keep him sidelined for long, but it's certainly possible that he could miss Tuesday's contest against the Hoyas. On the flip side, the guard could suit up against Georgetown just as feasibly. Smith averages 10.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.4 assists as the Johnnies' starting point guard.
JANUARY 13 • ROTOWIRE
Could miss next game Smith (shoulder) could miss Tuesday's game against Georgetown, but he won't be out a long time according to St. John's head coach Rick Pitino, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reports.
Impact Smith didn't suffer a dislocated shoulder in Saturday night's win over Villanova after leaving the matchup early. The senior guard did avoid the worst and won't be out long term, but he remains a game-time decision for the Red Storm's next game.
JANUARY 11 • ROTOWIRE
Shoulder fine but likely out Smith reportedly didn't dislocate his shoulder after it was reported earlier that he did, but he's on the bench with a sling and appears unlikely to return, Roger Rubin of Newsday...
Impact Smith's day is done against Villanova, but the X-rays on his shoulder reportedly came back negative. He appears to have avoided the worst, but it's unclear just how healthy that shoulder is at the moment.
