5 Bets to Make this Week

In 5 Bets this week, we look at the beginning of the NFL preseason, opening games of the Premier League, PGA Tour, NASCAR and MLB.

Two professional sports organizations start their seasons this week and 5 Bets is all over an NFL preseason game and a Premier League match.

The PGA Tour has another weak field and I am looking at a career grinder to make some noise at the Wyndham Championship.

The Canadian Football League has one undefeated team remaining and their opponent’s owner this week guaranteed a victory. That won’t go so well for them.

Lastly the San Diego Padres made a splash at the trade deadline, but their starting pitcher on Thursday has been struggling as of late.

5 Bets to Make this Week

  • Las Vegas Raiders -2 over Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Leicester City-Brentford +195 scoreless first half
  • Denny McCarthy +333 to finish in Top 10
  • Winnipeg -110 to cover 5.5 points against Montreal
  • Colorado Rockies +190 to defeat San Diego Padres

Raiders Win Battle of Back-Up QBs

The Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars will meet on Thursday in the first preseason game of the season at the Hall of Fame Game. The line opened at -1.5 for the Raiders, but quickly went up to -2 when it was announced the Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence wouldn’t be playing.

With Raiders starting QB Derek Carr also likely not playing, that leaves the game up to the back-ups and Las Vegas has a decided edge. Jarrett Stidham and Nick Mullens have extensive NFL experience, while Jacksonville’s presumptive back up C.J. Brethard is nursing a groin injury and won’t play. That means third-stringer Jake Luton will start and get a majority of the snaps.

Go with Stidham and Mullens. Experience matters even in preseason games. The Raiders should cover the two points easily.

Low Scoring First Half for Leicester City-Brentford

The Premier League kicks off its 2022-23 season on Friday with Crystal Palace vs. Arsenal, but I am looking at one of the three Sunday games.

Leicester City will face Brentford on Sunday and the two teams are notoriously slow starters. Leicester City scored 70% of its goals in the preseason in the second half.

Brentford, who is a +260 pick to pull off the upset, allowed 75% of its goals in the second half. Also of the six goals they scored in the preseason, three of them came in the second half.

Since I don’t think much of Brentford’s offense, I’ll take a scoreless first half at +195. I wouldn’t be surprised if no goals are scored in this contest.

McCarthy Continues Hot Streak

Denny McCarthy has two factors going for him at this week’s Wyndham Championship. The first is the 29-year-old has played well at this event. He has finished T22, T9, and T15 since 2019.

The second is he has been playing fairly well as of late. In his most five recent events, he has finished in the Top 10 in three of them, including the Memorial and the U.S. Open.

McCarthy also seems to be hanging around the leaderboard and at +333 to finish in the Top 10 it’s a bet I like. Look for McCarthy to be there on Sunday.

Guaranteed Victory Will Backfire for Alouettes

Earlier this week Montreal Alouettes owner Gary Stern proclaimed on Twitter that his team would beat the undefeated Winnipeg Blue Bombers Thursday at home in a Canadian Football League game.

“Game against Winnipeg coming up fast. No one gives us a chance. I sincerely believe, we are at home, we have the talent, coaches installed great systems, we will win this game,” Stern wrote.

Called shots are always risky and now the Blue Bombers have bulletin board material. Not that they needed it. They should trounce the Alouettes on the road on Thursday.

Montreal is 2-5 on the season and most recently lost to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, 24-17. The Alouettes won’t have an answer for Winnipeg’s offense and the Blue Bombers should easily cover the 5.5 points.

Musgrove Struggles Continue Against Rockies

San Diego Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove has faced the Colorado Rockies two times this season with very different results. Now we have to decide which Musgrove is going to show up on Thursday.

Will it be the one who got shelled on July 13, giving up five runs on nine hits in Colorado? Or will it be the one that allowed no runs on four hits through six innings in San Diego on June 10?

Musgrove has struggled his last two games and his ERA has gone up from 2.25 in June to 4.24 for the month of July. I know the Padres are loaded offensively, but I am going to take a flyer on the Rockies at +190.
