The pucks are flying. Here are five points to ponder as the NHL concludes the first quarter of its schedule.

1. The New York Islanders are showing that last year’s meteoric rise and playoff victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins was no fluke. They’re playing hungry, and entered the second half of November at 14-3-1, rallying from a 3-0 third-period hole to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers on the road last weekend.
2. Other hot teams now include the Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins, the Colorado Avalanche and defending Stanley Cup champions the Louis Blues.

3. Most improved teams this season include the Florida Panthers, who got defensive help in the off-season. This looks like a breakout year for them. Declining clubs? The Columbus Blue Jackets dealt away big players after going all in for a Stanley Cup run last year and failing.
4. Under-achieving groups include the Vegas Golden Knights, who were in the Stanley Cup finals two years ago as an expansion team. But if the last two games are any indication, it could be a good time to jump on them for a while, because they’re looking at a possible turnaround.

5. Futures! Want deals on the potential Stanley Cup winner? Do it now if you can:

• The shortest price, the Boston Bruins, are nearly an 8-1 payout at William Hill. The defending champion Blues are 11-1.
• The Montreal Canadiens and Flyers are 35-1. Odds pay high because teams must first qualify for the playoffs and win it all in late spring.
