DFS, Virtual Sports & More—What’s Your Best Bet?

While betting on your favorite team has its charms, remember, you can try out some other types of sports betting action at New Jersey’s online casino sites and at daily fantasy sports sites around the country.

In the past year, sports betting has exploded in the U.S., with sports books now legal in 13 different states (and counting). It all started in May 2018, when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal law banning sports betting after a long legal battle with the state of New Jersey.

Things have moved so swiftly, it’s easy to forget that online casino gaming has been around since 2014 in New Jersey. Many of the state’s online sites offered up other forms of online sports betting before the Supreme Court weighed in—or at least a version of sports betting.

Here’s a look at some options:

Daily Fantasy Sports. Two of the leaders in the emerging sportsbook battles are DFS giants DraftKings and FanDuel. DraftKings was the first online sportsbook to go live in New Jersey and has also made inroads in West Virginia and now New York. FanDuel is moving into Pennsylvania.

However, both companies still offer their full slate of DFS games through their sportsbook apps. In New Jersey, DraftKings even offers some online casino games.

Even though they’re now considered sportsbooks, both sites still let you pick your own fantasy line-up and play for prizes in DFS games each day.

Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City offers a DFS variation called FastPick at Resorts.com. Basically, players make their bets and then select between three and 10 sports player matchups outlined by Resorts. The casino matches two players head to head in various sports.If all your picks win, you cash in. The more picks on your entry, the more you win—up to $10,000. That’s a nice payday.
Virtual Sports. This is sports betting at its most basic, with the quick return of a slot machine. Offered at many of New Jersey’s online casinos, most virtual sports games are races—horseracing, motorcycles, cars, greyhounds, you name it. Soccer and some other sports are featured as well.Just place your bet in the race and within seconds they’re off. A random number generator determines the winner. Like a slot machine, the play comes fast, with races going off every few minutes. Unlike a slot machine, you get to actually root for your horse (or car and so on) and witness some pretty cool graphics.
