Get In the Horse Race: Don’t Miss These August Turf Contests

Del Mar and Saratoga will soon trade punches like prize fighters, unfurling huge purses to attract significant handle—including your betting bucks.

Del Mar delivers the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic on Saturday, August 17 and complements it with the $300,000 Del Mar Oaks, the $250,000 Del Mar Handicap and several $100,000 races.

Saratoga offers the $600,000 Alabama and $200,000 Lake Placid events—pretty impressive, but Round One goes to Del Mar.

For bettors, the combined package, along with the $400,000 Woodbine Breeders and some six-figure races at Monmouth Park, Colonial Downs and Thistledown, is a huge winner.

Saratoga evens it up with a blockbuster on Saturday, August 24. Here comes the Travers, for $1.25 million. And the $850,000 Sword Dancer. Not to mention the $700,000 Personal Ensign, $600,000 Forego, $500,000 Allen Jerkens and Ballerina Stakes, along with the $400,000 Ballston—and a partridge in a pear tree, even in August.

The big purses generate good-sized fields, multiple betting entries and some potential monster payouts for Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5 and Pick 6 pools.

These are the conditions that generate “overlays,” where horses drift up to higher odds than normal because of the large size of the field.

This results in the horse being higher-priced than the past performances would seem to warrant, and could translate into the angle that turns a profit for you.

Somebody has to be overlooked in a big field. Maybe your horse, which you’d figure at 3-1, goes off 7-1. Prepare to pounce when that shows ups. It could be your play of the day.
