Good Books: sportsquare Rates the Top U.S. Mobile Apps

As the legal sports betting industry expands and players become almost completely immersed in mobile, you’ve got more betting options than ever. Here are our choices for the top mobile sportsbooks.

DraftKings

With DraftKings, the stats do all the talking. This sportsbook boasts the highest average rating (4.8/5 stars) on the highest number of ratings (19.5K) in the App Store. This earns DraftKings the No. 73 spot on the sports chart—the second highest of any mobile sportsbook.

A few unique features of the app contribute to DraftKings’ success. First, the sleek presentation gives users the easiest navigation experience of any mobile sportsbook. DraftKings also offer cross-sport parlays, which expand users’ opportunities to win if they aren’t confident within one sport.

The sportsbook has also updated its app more than 25 times in the past year, putting out a new one almost once a week. Finally, DraftKings offers a first-time risk-free bet, matching your bet up to $500.

Overall, DraftKings caters to the user more than any of its competitors. It wasn’t a tough decision to put this sportsbook at the top of the heap.

FanDuel

The current mobile sports betting industry is essentially a two-horse race, with FanDuel sitting comfortably in the No. 2 spot. FanDuel sports a 4.4/5 star average rating in the App Store on nearly 3,000 ratings, ranking second and third respectively among all mobile sportsbooks. It enjoys the No. 47 spot on the sports chart, which is the highest of any mobile sportsbook. This is no fluke, as FanDuel also caters nicely to the user with its clean in-app look and many other user-friendly features.

While FanDuel also offers a first-time $500 match bet, it serves up daily promo deals so users can get as much value as possible on each bet. The No. 2 book has updated its app essentially once a month this year, again doing its best to cater to the user.

BetStars

BetStars checks in at our No. 3 spot with a 3.8 star average rating on close to 250 overall reviews. Although it lacks the sexy stats in that regard, this sportsbook makes up for it with a cornucopia of features and arguably the most value-per-bet of any app on this list.

BetStars offers a risk-free $500 starting bet, just like the first two apps on our list, and far more promotions. It features a weekly deal of a free $5 wager when you bet at least $25, new promotions every day, and a Tuesday Happy Hour that provides more deals on free bets. It also offers bonus money on parlays and a policy to refund MLB bets that lose in extra innings.

This app is only available in New Jersey for now, but it’s a contender for other states as they introduce legal sports betting.

PointsBet
Our No. 4 spot belongs to PointsBet, partly due to its 4.5 star average rating in the App Store (on 150 ratings), which is good for second overall among all mobile sportsbooks. PointsBet offers two risk-free starting bets up to a combined $1,000. The unique feature of the app is the PointsBet Debit Card, which allows for instant access to your winnings.

Many user reviews addressed the app’s odds and generally preferred them to other, bigger mobile sportsbooks. The app is updated monthly. It’s exclusive to Jersey bettors for now, but its features and top-of-the-line user experience deserve wider recognition. Editor’s note: PointsBet just announced a multi-year deal with Double Eagle Hotel and Casino in Cripple Creek, CO which includes the launch of both retail and mobile sportsbook operations, pending legislative approval.

William Hill

Rounding out our Top 5 is William Hill. There are two separate William Hill apps, one each for New Jersey and Nevada players, with more on the horizon as William Hill gets licensed in other states. The apps combined for a 4.2 star rating on 932 overall ratings and placed 135th on the sports chart, which is good for third overall of any mobile sportsbook.

This is a rather straightforward app offering live bets, parlays, moneylines, spreads, prop bets and more. William Hill will match your first $50 in bets.

The app isn’t going to offer crazy promos and value bets like some others on this list, but users experience minimal problems with the features that are available, one reason it’s been so successful in the App Store.

SugarHouse

PlaySugarhouse.com is among the few apps available to bettors in both Pennsylvania and New Jersey, though the recent launch of online sports betting in the Keystone State has been hampered by a lack of availability on iOS devices; that situation remains in flux, with work-arounds in-play and on the way for iPhone users.

Meanwhile, a useful feature of the Sugarhouse app is that users can enjoy slots, table games, free bingo and more all while using the same virtual wallet to quickly flip back over to make bets on games. The app has been updated 22 times in the past year, showing that SugarHouse is committed to improving the online player experience.

888 Sports
Another New Jersey exclusive, 888 offers plenty of promo deals including a sign-up bonus as well as live bets, parlays, moneylines, spreads, prop bets and more. It also offers a handy Sports Betting 101 feature, where users can learn how to best place their bets in every sport.

Bottom line: We’d recommend any mobile sportsbook on this list; let us know if you agree at [email protected]. Have fun and bet safely!
