This could be the biggest rivalry since Yankees-Red Sox, Celtics-Lakers or Packers-Bears. In May, for the first time in history, New Jersey sports books logged $318.9 million in wagers, wresting the No. 1 spot from Nevada. Is this the start of a trend?

In May, New Jersey sportsbooks logged $318.9 million in wagers, stealing Nevada’s thunder for the first time ever. OK, it wasn’t exactly a landslide—Nevada books took in $317.4 million for the month—but actually, that could make the contest more fun.

New Jersey sports betting launched just over a year ago, when the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act that limited the action to Nevada and three other states. Jersey and six other states are now in the bookmaking business and a dozen more are expected to follow, according to ESPN.

Regulators in the Soprano State report that about $3 billion has been bet on sporting events in the state over the past year. Division of Gaming Enforcement Director David Rebuck (left) predicted last year that his state would overtake Nevada by the end of 2019—and he was right.

Of course, Governor Phil Murphy took a few bows at the All-American Sports Betting Summit hosted by Monmouth Park last month. “While we all knew it would be successful,” Murphy crowed, “I don’t think anyone expected how quickly New Jersey would come to dominate the growth in the market in the year since our sports betting law took effect, or how advantageously New Jersey would be positioned to dominate the entire marketplace.”

The DraftKings Sportsbook at Resorts Atlantic City is part of the DFS network that’s dominated the market in the city. According to the Asbury Park Press, the FanDuel Sportsbook at the Meadowlands is leading the way with $84.6 million in gross revenues over the past year.
