NFL Top Offseason Trades & Betting Fallout

NFL teams haven’t been shy about pulling the trigger on offseason trades. Which will have the biggest effect on the upcoming season?
Just a week into the 2022 NFL offseason, we’ve seen headline-making trades that will have a big impact on how the rest of the season plays out. Here are the trades, and what they mean:
NFL Broncos Get: QB Russell Wilson, 2022 4th pick
Seahawks Get: QB Drew Lock, TE Noah Fant, DT Shelby Harris, 2022 1st, 2nd & 5th picks, 2023 1st & 2nd picks
The AFC West is now the clear elite division for quarterback play in the NFL. The division’s QBs are Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Derek Carr and Russell Wilson. All four should lead competitive teams this season, meaning a close division race is on the horizon.
The Denver Broncos have a playoff-caliber roster, but will likely have to compete for a wild card spot. The Seattle Seahawks have committed to more of a rebuild year with their roster; after missing the playoffs with a disgruntled Wilson at the helm, it was time for them to shake things up. Seattle will likely find itself right back at the bottom of the NFC West this year.

Commanders Get: QB Carson Wentz, 2022 2nd & 7th picks
Colts Get: 2022 2nd & 3rd picks, 2023 conditional 2nd/3rd pick
Carson Wentz is joining his third team in as many seasons, and will now play his former Philadelphia Eagles team twice a year in the NFC East. With a solid team, the Washington Commanders (formerly Washington Football Team, formerly Washinton Redskins) finally have their quarterback, so they look to be a contender for the NFC East title. This is a young team, so its success in 2022 will come down to which and how many youngsters continue to grow into a starring role. The Commanders have a real chance, but I would expect them to finish just outside the playoff picture in their first year.
The Indianapolis Colts are getting out of the huge contract they inherited from Philadelphia when the Wentz experiment quickly failed there. They still field a borderline playoff roster and head back to the drawing board in regard to the signal-caller position. If the Colts can upgrade, look for them to make some noise in the postseason.

Chargers Get: OLB Khalil Mack
Bears Get: 2022 2nd pick, 2023 6th pick
The Los Angeles Chargers understand the significance of having a Top 10 NFL QB in Justin Herbert still on a rookie contract. As a result, they’re spending their excess money on a high-level surrounding cast, similar to how their defending champ LA counterparts have operated recently. Khalil Mack is one of the best players in the league and immediately makes this defense better. Followed by a signing of ex-Patriots CB JC Jackson, the Chargers defense is looking borderline elite and this has now become one of the best two-way teams in the league. A Super Bowl is absolutely within reach this season for L.A.
This is a clear rebuilding move for the Chicago Bears, who are looking to get younger. Chicago will spend a lot of time in one of the bottom two spots in the NFC North standings for the next few years.

Browns Get: WR Amari Cooper, 2022 6th pick
Cowboys Get: 2022 5th & 6th picks
The NFL’s Cleveland Browns basically traded top receivers here, as the addition of Amari Cooper led to the release of Jarvis Landry. Cooper is slightly better and slightly younger, so it’s fair to call this move an upgrade for the Browns, especially at the low-low cost of just a 5th and 6th round pick. This move, however, does not move the needle on Cleveland’s playoff hopes, as they likely still sit just outside of the postseason pool.
For the Dallas Cowboys, the move was essentially a choice between Cooper and Michael Gallup. The team had to choose which stud receiver to pay, and trading Cooper this quickly saved them some money to put towards Gallup’s extension. This is a bit of a step backwards for the Cowboys and their playoff hopes.

Buccaneers Get: G Shaq Mason
Patriots Get: 2022 5th pick
With Tom Brady returning from retirement to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team has reunited him with his former Patriots bodyguard, Shaq Mason. Mason will strengthen an already solid O-line in Tampa, which should give Brady another legitimate chance at title #8. Tampa has as good a shot at the Super Bowl as anyone again this year.
The New England Patriots may be inching toward a retool of their roster, going younger, but trying to stay relevant and in the playoff mix. As a result, they’ll probably find themselves on the outside looking in at the pack come postseason.
With such key players on the move, this season could be wide open. Check in on the futures odds below and keep at it as more big moves are made. It’s officially time to get excited about football again!
