NFL Week 6 Storylines: What You Saw, What You Missed, What You Need to Know

To bet the NFL in the coming weeks, it’s important to stay up to date, as the landscape of the league changes day to day. Here’s your team-by-team playbook as we go into Week 6.
Through the first five weeks of the NFL season, there have been lots of ebbs and flows and tons of storylines. Unless you paid attention each week, it’s likely you’ve missed a thing or two so far.
Here’s a brief update on each team’s current standing going into Week 6:
Arizona Cardinals (1-3-1)
Arizona was finally able to grab its first win of the season last week in Cincinnati. The team’s biggest storyline this season has been the development of its No. 1 overall pick, QB Kyler Murray. He’s shown flashes of great promise early on but has been inconsistent, as one would expect of a new quarterback. Don’t expect too much from this bunch the rest of this season.
Atlanta Falcons (1-4)
The Falcons have disappointed early on, mainly due to the surprising absence of a running game. Lead back Devonta Freeman is averaging just 37 yards a game, which is not going to intimidate defenses too much. Also the team’s pass rush has been poor, only registering five sacks through as many weeks of action. Atlanta doesn’t look to have much promise this season, although the Falcons can be expected to beat teams with similar records.
Baltimore Ravens (3-2)
Baltimore came out of the gates hot, with two blowout victories to start the season. Lamar Jackson looked to be having a breakout year, and the defense looked impenetrable. In the next three weeks, however, the team struggled. The Ravens lost back-to-back games to the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cleveland Browns before squeaking out an OT victory against rival Pittsburgh Steelers last week. The Ravens have a very strong team, but they must be more consistent to be a top-tier AFC team.
Buffalo Bills (4-1)
Buffalo’s record is slightly deceptive. The Bills have played better than predicted so far, but against a mostly weak schedule. QB Josh Allen has played well and brought his team within one game of New England’s AFC East lead, but don’t expect a playoff run here. As the schedule progresses and becomes more difficult, expect this team to flounder.
Carolina Panthers (3-2)
After a rough 0-2 start, Carolina has put together three straight impressive victories. Safety Eric Reid came away with a game-sealing turnover in two straight games, and that defense looks impressive. QB Kyle Allen is 3-0 since replacing Cam Newton, with five TDs and zero INTs. Expect this team to stay hot and make a run at a wild card spot.
Chicago Bears (3-2)
This Bears team is one of the most confusing in the league. On paper, they should be one of the best. But after a bad loss to Oakland last week, their dominance has come into question. Chicago’s defense is tops, but the offense has struggled, mostly due to the weak quarterback play of Mitch Trubisky. If the offense can figure it out, this team can be as good as anyone—but that’s a huge if.
Cincinnati Bengals (0-5)
There’s not much to say about Cincinnati. They’re terrible. Nothing has gone well for the Bengals this year and you can expect things to stay that way. Stay away from betting Cincy.
Cleveland Browns (2-3)
This Cleveland team is another confusing one. The Browns have all the ingredients to be a great team, as many expected entering the season. Unfortunately, they’ve been as inconsistent as anyone in the league, alternating wins and losses each week so far. The team looked great in the two wins, and awful in the three losses. As the saying goes, cream rises to the top, and this is a very talented bunch. Hopefully they can figure it out.
Dallas Cowboys (3-2)
Dallas’s schedule has dictated the Cowboys’ success so far. They started 3-0 against three bad teams and dropped their past two against good competition. Dak Prescott and the stout Dallas defense have played well. This team just needs to prove that it belongs at the top with some big victories. Until they do so, betting the Cowboys should be on a matchup basis.
Denver Broncos (1-4)
Denver has underperformed so far this season. The Broncs were finally able to get win No. 1 last week against the Los Angeles Chargers, but played far under its talent level previously. With star defenders Chris Harris Jr. and Von Miller reportedly on the trading block, things might get bad fast in Denver. Avoid betting on this team moving forward.
Detroit Lions (2-1-1)
The Lions have been a surprise this season. Their offense is very talented, but it’s the defense that stepped up in big wins against the LA Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles, as well as a near victory against Kansas City. This team has the ability to make a wild card run, given they stay hot coming off this week’s bye. Expect more success in Detroit.
Green Bay Packers (4-1)
Green Bay has looked like a force so far in 2019. The Packers’ offense, led by star QB Aaron Rodgers, has been strong as always, but the young defense has stepped up and at times looked even stronger. With their sole loss coming on a goal-line blunder against the Eagles, expect the Packers to have a dominant season.
Houston Texans (3-2)
Another inconsistent team, Houston has shown glimpses of greatness so far this season. Their weakness is a poor secondary, but the offense is very good and QB Deshaun Watson is proving himself as a near-top-tier QB. Expect more consistency and a solid record from here on out.
Indianapolis Colts (3-2)
The Colts just picked up a statement victory against the previously undefeated Kansas City Chiefs, and are two possessions away from standing at 5-0 right now. They’ve hardly missed a beat without Andrew Luck, as replacement Jacoby Brissett and running back Marlon Mack led the team to a strong start. Expect this team to stay hot and make a run at the division title this year.
Jacksonville Jaguars (2-3)
The biggest storyline here has been Minshew Mania, as new QB Gardner Minshew has quickly emerged as a fan favorite around the NFL. Unfortunately, his offense is not too strong, so this team can’t be expected to have great success.
Kansas City Chiefs (4-1)
The Chiefs are a powerhouse, simply put. Their offense is as good as it gets and their defense is good enough to survive shootouts, which seem to occur on a weekly basis for these guys. The team will dominate the regular season and make another deep playoff run.
Los Angeles Chargers (2-3)
The biggest storyline here is running back Melvin Gordon. After a long holdout, the star back returned and the team is integrating him back into his starting role. This talented team has underperformed so far, but the trend shouldn’t stick for too long. Expect the Chargers to turn it around and make a playoff run.
Los Angeles Rams (3-2)
After looking dominant in the first two weeks of the season, the Rams came off as rather weak in the last three. Even in their third win, they looked to have dropped off slightly, an evaluation that was supported by two straight ensuing losses. This team has plenty of talent, but they need to be more consistent if they want to return to the Super Bowl this year, as the NFC looks particularly deep. Keep a close eye on both LA teams moving forward.
Miami Dolphins (0-4)
This is a similar situation to Cincinnati. This season is a lost cause in Miami. Expect the worst.
Minnesota Vikings (3-2)
The Vikings are a very talented team on both sides of the ball that has suffered two close division losses so far. They face a hot Eagles team this week, which will be a test, but expect them to have a strong season and contend for a playoff spot.
New England Patriots (5-0)
When you have the best defense in the league and the greatest QB of all-time, you can’t complain. This team is a force to be reckoned with. Don’t expect too many losses this year, including in the playoffs.
New Orleans Saints (4-1)
After losing Hall of Fame QB Drew Brees in their Week 2 loss to the Rams, New Orleans has returned to form, winning three straight and improving to 4-1 overall. Their defense is elite and when Brees returns, this team is scary good. Similar to New England, it’s hard to see this team losing too many more games in 2019.
New York Giants (2-3)
The Giants have shown a little more promise than people expected this year since rookie QB Daniel Jones took over. This team has hope for the future, but that doesn’t apply to this season. The Big Blue defense is poor, to say the least. This team shouldn’t do too much more winning this year.
New York Jets (0-4)
Some expected this team to make some noise after signing Le’Veon Bell and CJ Mosley, among others. But the reality has been rather disappointing. Franchise QB Sam Darnold has missed most of the season so far after contracting mono, and the remainder of the team has not exactly picked up the slack. Expect this team to continue their losing ways.
Oakland Raiders (3-2)
This team has been a surprise this season, especially after losing big free agent pickup Antonio Brown. No one expected much out of the Raiders, yet they’ve managed to grab some tough wins en route to a 3-2 start. Rookie running back Josh Jacobs has impressed, but this start looks like a fluke. Don’t expect the trend to continue.
Philadelphia Eagles (3-2)
Already nose-deep in another injury-plagued season, the Birds have managed to post a 3-2 start. QB Carson Wentz has shown glimpses of his 2017 MVP-caliber season, but his defense hasn’t offered much help. With a struggling pass rush and porous secondary, any strong passing attack will shred Philly to pieces. Wentz and the offense just need to be up to the challenge, a la Kansas City. If they can get healthy and get some secondary help, expect a strong second half and a run at the NFC East title.
Pittsburgh Steelers (1-4)
After losing QB Ben Roethlisberger for the season, Pittsburgh hasn’t shown too much fight. The Steelers’ sole victory came against a very weak Cincinnati team and shouldn’t be taken too seriously. This team isn’t looking like a contender this season. Keep them out of your betslips.
San Francisco 49ers (4-0)
Behind a strong defense and a breakout season from running back Matt Breida, San Fran is one of two remaining undefeateds. QB Jimmy Garoppolo is also playing well and is looking to lead his team to the playoffs. If they can keep this pace up, there’s no reason to believe they’re not for real.
Seattle Seahawks (4-1)
The Seahawks have gotten off to a strong start to the season behind an MVP-caliber start from QB Russell Wilson. Their defense is also very strong, per usual, and this team looks to be headed to the playoffs. You can rely on this team going forward, especially at home.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-3)
This team has been another very confusing one. They look awful one week, and hang 53 on the Rams’ stellar defense the next. All in all, don’t expect much from this team, especially due to the very inconsistent and mostly bad QB Jameis Winston.
Tennessee Titans (2-3)
The Titans don’t have much going for them talent-wise. They’ve gotten two victories against struggling teams, and there isn’t much reason to believe in what Tennessee has going on this year. Stay away from this team.
Washington Redskins (0-5)
This Redskins team can’t figure out which QB to start or even if they like their head coach. This whole situation is a mess, with no resolution in sight. Stay far away from the Redskins every week in 2019.
