NHL Live: Hockey Betting Tips & Tricks

When the National League Hockey takes center stage, here’s the inside scoop on better betting from sportsquare.

For sports bettors, here are some basic guidelines for betting on the NHL:

  • The moneyline represents the winning team, outright, along with the payment parameters. A typical line may look like Philadelphia Flyers -120, meaning you have to wager $120 to win $100. A plus sign, as in New York Rangers + 105, means a successful $100 bet on the Rangers returns $105 profit.
  • Over-Under. The over-under totals indicates the combined goals scored in the game, but that total ends in regulation time. An overtime or shootout goal does not change the total.

  • Straight Win Line. Where the overtime and shootout goal will matter is in the straight win line. A team getting or giving half a goal or “half a puck” will win or lose based on the total score including the overtime or shootout results.
  • The Grand Salami. Nope, we’re not talking about a big sandwich. In NHL terms, the Grand Salami is the combined goals, over-under, of all the games in the league that day, or a selected number of games. Overtime and shootouts do not affect those totals. But it’s a fun play.

  • Empty-Net Goal. One handicapping variable is the empty-net goal. It comes into play when a team trailing by one or two goals pulls the goalie, leaving an empty net for the privilege of one more attacker. Some teams, especially offensive juggernauts like the Pittsburgh Penguins, convert a good share of empty-net scenarios. Other teams like to play it safe and guard the lead. Knowing which team likes what style will help in selecting a winner against the spread.
