Online Game Reviews: Moai and Double Ruby

Easter Island heads and dancing gems—what could be better in an online slot game? Check out our introduction to Konami’s island-themed Moai and Double Ruby, a reel-spinning throwback from Everi.

Konami’s Moai

This multiline slot brings a fun theme built around the famous Moai monolithic statues that stand on Polynesia’s Easter Island. The mysterious human-figure statues are adapted here as full-reel wild symbols in a main feature that occurs randomly and can be quite lucrative.

The base game is available in several payline configurations, but the most common is as a five-reel, 40-line game on an array with three rows of symbols on each reel. Konami’s “Action Stacked Symbols” appear on all reels during the primary game, clustering like symbols to make up big wins. Randomly during the primary game, a number of adjacent symbols are replaced with the same symbol before the spin is initiated.

The mystery Wild Feature is the core of the game. Randomly, extra Moai statues appear as full-reel wild symbols, many marked with “2X” or “3X” to double or triple the pay for wins involving the symbols. This can fill the screen with potentially multiplying wild symbols.

That feature also is active during a frequent free game feature. Any three, four or five pearl symbols trigger eight, 12 or 20 free games, respectively, with the random Wild Feature occurring more frequently during the free spins.

GoldenNugget.com will match your first deposit dollar-for-dollar up to $1,000. For a limited time, with an additional $30 deposit, get 200 Free Spins on the brand-new slot, 88 Fortunes Megaways.

Everi’s Double Ruby

This game is another example of Everi’s dedication to the classic reel-spinning style of slot machine. It is a three-reel, nine-line slot set up in the style of traditional mechanical reel-spinners.

Even the reel symbols are classics—single and double bars, four different “7” combinations, and the top-paying Double Ruby symbols. If three of the top symbols appear on paylines 2-9, it returns 10,000 credits times the line bet. If they line up on Payline 1—the middle, horizontal payline—they return the game’s top jackpot of 10,000 credits times the line bet.

The Double Ruby symbol also is wild, substituting for all other symbols. One Double Ruby symbol in a win doubles the jackpot, and two of the symbols on the payline with a winning symbol multiplies the jackpot by four.

Mostly, this is a classic reel-spinning experience in a very volatile game—in other words, game play is dotted with very substantial wins. This is a gambler’s game that will be enjoyed by slot traditionalists as well as novices.

  • Payback percentage—also known as return to player or RTP—refers to the percentage of wagers that are returned to all players over the active life of a game. A 94 percent payback percentage does not mean you will get 94 percent of your money returned to you every time. It means there is a 6 percent house edge on the game. (Even a 100 percent payback doesn’t guarantee you’ll win—it means there’s no house edge. It’s like the flip of a coin.) Manufacturers offer operators a range of percentages, and it’s up to the operator to pick which to offer players.
  • Hit frequency refers to the percentage of all spins that will result in a win of some kind. Remember that these wins can often be less than your bet. (If that happens too often, you should find another game!) Some manufacturers do not provide this statistic; in this case, we estimate based on the volatility of the game program.
  • Volatility refers to the manner in which wins are distributed on a slot machine. Low volatility means there will be lots of little hits, with wins of some kind very frequently (again, watch for too many wins less than your bet). High volatility means the hits are fewer and farther between, but there are many more huge wins—the kind that can turn a losing session into a winning session.
  • Ways to Win refers to a game in which there are no paylines. In this style of game, adjacent like symbols on the screen register wins, and the number of spots on the entire reel set determines how many ways the player can possibly win on each spin.
  • Cost to cover refers to the level of wager required to activate all the paylines on a screen. The good advice was always to wager enough to activate all the paylines, but these days, most games use this figure as a minimum bet. (Too many people were betting a penny on a penny game in the past.)
