WSOP Offers Stream of Satellite Games Ahead of July 8 Main Event

For poker players, the World Series of Poker held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas each year is the Masters, the Super Bowl and, yes, the World Series all rolled into one. And whether you’re a pro or an amateur player, everyone dreams of pulling a Chris Moneymaker.

Moneymaker, of course, qualified for the WSOP Main Event in 2003 through online satellites at PokerStars and eventually won the event’s $2.5 million prize. His win pushed televised poker into the limelight, and it hasn’t looked back since.

Since 2003, online satellites for WSOP have had their ups and downs, but since WSOP.com went live in New Jersey and Nevada, players in both states have had their chance to live the Moneymaker dream (amazing how well that name works).

This year WSOP.com is offering a steady schedule of satellites at both its Nevada and New Jersey sites. Remember, the WSOP is actually a more than monthlong series of 74 tournaments, and WSOP.com has satellites for other big events before the Main Event gets underway July 8.

Early satellites from WSOP.com are focusing on events like the Colossus III, a $565 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em tournament with starting flights on Friday, June 2, Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4, respectively. The event carries a guaranteed $1 million first prize.

Other satellites carry packages for early events and three online tournaments that will award WSOP bracelets. The online events will be only be offered at WSOP.com Nevada.

Satellites for the WSOP Main Event are held every Sunday at 7:30 p.m. with a $200 buy-in. Think about that—a $200 buy-in that could lead you all the way to the Main Event. Last year’s Main Event winner Qui Nguyen took home just over $8 million.

Now that’s the Moneymaker dream.
